The latest improvement on the “skip the check-out line” technology is here and this time, it just might work. We’ve seen everything from digital shopping carts which were hugely cost prohibitive, to mobile devices that just couldn’t be widely executed, to putting things like RFID’s in packaging which would take a huge investment by the CPG industry. Now, a company called Ahold has developed a hand-held scanner with Motorola, which is essentially a smart phone with a handle, that is neither bulky nor difficult to use. They are testing in a small US market and results seem to be very positive so far.
