With traditional newpapers going the way of the Dodo bird, media companies are trying to find new revenue streams for their newspapers. The obvious choice that everyone has gotten on board with is a digital format. In Winnipeg however, they’ve decided that since most people read the newspaper over a cup of coffe that they would bring both together. The News Cafe is a shot at branding the local newspaper in an entirely new format. You can run is to grab a quick cup, stay and hang out, or use their space for things like company town halls or poetry readings. The most interesting twist with this idea is that Free Press employees will be in constant attendance. The paper is rotating employees on a weekly basis so readers can meet the editors and journalists. It will be interesting to see what happens when their advice columnist is in the house.
